What Wayland stands for

Airport

McClellan-Palomar Airport sits in the heart of our community, and decisions about its future will shape Carlsbad for generations. Although the airport is owned by San Diego County, Wayland believes residents, not outside interests or patrons,  must have a real seat at the table.

• Demand full transparency on any expansion plans and their impact on surrounding neighborhoods
• Oppose runway or capacity expansions that increase noise, traffic, and pollution for all Carlsbad residents
• Require independent environmental and noise studies before any major changes are approved
• Ensure community input is meaningful, not just a checkbox in a predetermined process

Street and Traffic Safety

Our streets should be safe for everyone — whether you're walking your kids to school, biking to the beach, or driving through a neighborhood. Wayland will push for practical, community-driven solutions to Carlsbad's growing traffic challenges.

• Prioritize traffic calming measures in residential neighborhoods with documented speeding problems
• Improve pedestrian crossings and bike infrastructure on key corridors
• Work with NCTD and regional partners to reduce cut-through traffic in Carlsbad
• Ensure road maintenance and repair budgets reflect the actual condition of our streets
• Engage neighborhoods directly before implementing changes that affect local traffic patterns

Saving our Beaches

Carlsbad's beaches are a public treasure — not a commodity. Wayland is committed to protecting beach access, water quality, and the natural coastline that defines our city's identity.

• Oppose development or privatization that reduces public beach access
• Advocate for robust stormwater management to keep our ocean clean and safe for swimming
• Support beach replenishment and coastal erosion programs and partner with neighboring coastal cities to protect our shoreline long-term
• Partner with state, regional and federal agencies to address sea-level rise and climate impacts on the coast
• Protect the lagoons and wetlands that feed into our coastal ecosystem

Saving open space for parks and recreation

Open space is what separates a livable city from an overdeveloped one. Wayland will fight to preserve Carlsbad's parks, trails, and natural areas so future generations can enjoy the same quality of life we have today.

• Protect existing open space designations from being rezoned for development
• Expand trail and bicycle connectivity between neighborhoods, parks, and the coast
• Ensure park facilities are equitably distributed across all districts
• Prioritize maintenance and improvement of existing parks before acquiring new obligations
• Engage youth sports leagues, seniors, and families in planning recreational spaces

Supporting small and large businesses

A thriving local economy benefits everyone. Wayland wants Carlsbad to be a place where businesses of all sizes can grow, hire locally, and contribute to the community — without being buried in red tape.

• Streamline permitting and licensing processes so businesses can open and expand faster
• Support the Carlsbad Village and Barrio as vibrant commercial districts with distinct local character.  Support Carlsbad to become a gastronomical city.
• Work with the Chamber of Commerce and business associations to understand and address real barriers
• Attract employers that offer quality jobs and align with Carlsbad's values
• Ensure zoning and land-use decisions consider the long-term economic health of the city

Sensible housing development

Carlsbad must meet its regional housing obligations — but how and where we build matters enormously. Wayland supports housing that fits our community's scale, infrastructure, and character rather than density-for-density's-sake.

• Advocate for housing that is compatible with existing neighborhood scale and design
• Ensure infrastructure — roads, schools, water, parks — keeps pace with new development
• Support affordable and workforce housing options that let teachers, firefighters, and local workers live here. Learn from other cities with successful models.
• Oppose developments that overwhelm neighborhoods without adequate community input
• Hold developers accountable to their commitments on affordability and community benefits

Safe transition for unhoused people

Addressing homelessness requires compassion, coordination, and real solutions — not just enforcement. Wayland believes Carlsbad can be both a welcoming community and a safe one, and that the two goals are not in conflict.

• Support regional partnerships that connect unhoused individuals to shelter, services, and housing pathways
• Follow outreach programs in other state and cities that have been successful in building  trust and offer genuine alternatives to living on the street
• Work with nonprofits and faith communities already doing this work effectively
• Ensure that neighborhoods are not impacted and public spaces remain safe and accessible for all residents while treating unhoused people with dignity
• Oppose purely punitive approaches that move the problem without solving it
